• FAQ’s

    What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are single synthetic (or mink) eyelashes manufactured to mimic a human eyelash. They are tapered at one end (sometimes both ends) to give a natural look and come in a variety of curls, lengths, thickness’, and colors.

    What do eyelash extensions do?

Eyelash extensions will give you the look of having longer, curlier, and thicker eyelashes.

    Are eyelash extensions permanent?

Individual eyelash extensions, when applied properly, are permanent and will stay on your natural lash until the natural lash sheds.  They can be removed safely in our salon without damaging you natural lashes by our Certified Artists.  We believe so strongly in protecting your natuarl lashes that we will even remove our client’s lashes for free.  There is a nominal fee for other salon’s work.

What happens during the application process?

You will lie down on a comfortable massage table and protective eye pads will be placed under your eyes. You will be asked to keep your eyes closed during the entire process while a Certified Eyelash Artist applies eyelash extensions to your individual eyelashes. It is not uncommon to fall asleep during the application process.  There is a video if you would like to see the process www.lashesbydesign/firsttimers.ca

    Do the extensions feel heavy?

No, you will not be able to feel the extensions at all.  If you have had lashe extensions before, and they felt heavy, itchy or painful, then they were not applied properly.

How long does the application process take?

Eyelash extensions can take anywhere from 45 minutes for touch ups to 1.5 – 2 hours for a full set.  A full Russian Volume set (Russian Volume, 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D or 7D could take almost 3 hours, depending on the number of natural lashes)

How long will the extensions last?

On average, our clients come in every 3-4 weeks because your natural eyelashes shed daily. As they shed, the extension attached to it will shed also and as a result you will require touch ups in order to maintain a full look.  Some clients have very thin natural lashes and will prefer to come in sooner to keep a fuller look.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for my appointment?

Yes! Please remove all make-up and contact lenses prior to your appointment. Not doing so will take up some of your appointment time and cut into the time used applying eyelash extensions.  Arriving on time helps you maximize the amount of lashes that you will get in your appointment.

Why does the appointment take so long?

Applying eyelash extensions properly is a very precise process. Unlike Clusters or Flairs, only one extension is applied to a single natural lash at a time. Lash isolation and extension application needs to be done carefully in order to avoid sticking lashes together.  If the application is rushed, then you will not have a great job.

Can I swim/ wear make-up/ mascara/ contact lenses when I have eyelash extensions?

Yes, you can do all of the above with the eyelash extensions and shower as usual. Salt water does not have an effect on the extensions.  We have aftercare products that you should use following certain activities that create oil on your lashes (hot yoga, spray tans, vacations, sunscreen, ect).  You can wear make-up and mascara (see after care), and it is safe for contact lens wearers.  All makeup needs to be oil free or the guarantee on the lashes will not be honored as oil disintegrates the bond.

Do I need to wear mascara with my eyelash extensions?

No. Your eyelash extensions will look like you have gorgeous long curly eyelashes so you will not need to wear mascara. If you do want to wear mascara, only apply it to the tips. DO NOT USE WATERPROOF or OIL BASED MASCARA as they will weaken the adhesive bond and may cause the eyelash extension to fall off prematurely and the guarantee on our work will not be honored.

What causes the extensions to fall off prematurely?

When lashes are applied correctly, they should last 6 – 8 weeks, which is the average span of your natural lash cycle.  However, you will notice constant lash shedding as the cycle is continuous.  There are 2 reasons lashes come off prematurely: Oil and Friction.  Oil breaks down the adhesive.  It is contained in many makeups, hair products, sweat, moisturizers …   You must wear oil free products and use a lash shampoo everyday to minimize the exposure to oil.   Friction on your lashes will weaken the bond and can even result in natural lash loss.  Friction includes activies such as rubbing your eyelash extensions, sleeping on your face and over brushing your lashes.  We will show you techniques to avoid sleeping on your lashes.  Make sure you don’t rub your extensions directly, and just scratch around them if you need to itch.

I suffer from Alopecia. Can I still get eyelash extensions?

Unfortunately no. You need to have strong, healthy lashes for eyelash extensions.  However, we can recommend a strong lash growth serum which should help you achieve the maximum look possible.
